Rep. Glenn introduces plan to help sexual assault survivors in Michigan
RELEASE|May 27, 2021

Rep. Annette Glenn, R-Midland, recently helped introduce a bipartisan plan to support sexual assault survivors and bring their abusers to justice.

The legislation is a continuation of efforts to improve the system after shortcomings discovered during the Larry Nassar investigation in 2018. The new proposals in the Michigan House would improve standards related to retention of medical records, sentencing guidelines and obligations for reporting potential crimes. There also would be more consequences for those who break the law.

“The Legislature has made some important progress supporting sexual assault survivors – but there is more work to be done,” Glenn said. “Our plan holds abusers and their enablers accountable by providing more tools to bring them to justice. We must do more to uncover misconduct and create a safer, more supportive environment – particularly for our young people who are abused under the guise of medical treatment.”

Glenn’s proposal calls for permanent loss of a medical license for someone convicted of sexual misconduct under pretext of medical treatment. Other measures would provide sentencing guidelines for physicians intentionally failing to maintain certain medical records, prohibit using position of authority to prevent reporting of a crime, and require distribution of training materials to mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse or neglect.

House Bills 4851-4858 are awaiting consideration in the House Judiciary Committee.

“I am hopeful these measures will receive a committee hearing soon,” Glenn said. “We must move quickly to enact these important protections.”
