State Rep. Steve Johnson testified yesterday before the House Transportation Committee in support of legislation to allow Michigan vehicle owners the option to renew their vehicle registration for up to two years.

Currently, a vehicle can only be registered for 12 months, or slightly longer if a registration is renewed less than six months before an individual’s birthday.

House Bill 5204 would offer Michigan vehicle owners the option of paying their registration fees up to two years at a time. If a vehicle owner chooses this option, it would decrease the number of registration and tag updates needed for their vehicle. The state could also see a savings with decreased mailing and administrative costs. Over a dozen other states provide multi-year vehicle registration options.

“This common-sense idea was initially brought to me by a local resident,” said Johnson, R-Wayland. “Allowing a two-year vehicle registration renewal period will save Michigan residents time and effort when renewing their vehicle registration.”

House Bill 5204 is awaiting further action by the House Transportation Committee.
