Rep. Bellino: The time to repeal pension tax is now
RELEASE|January 24, 2022

State Rep. Joe Bellino today highlighted his plan to repeal Michigan’s tax on senior citizens, which has been in the works since he introduced House Bill 4002 in January of last year. This is a matter that Bellino has been working on since joining the Legislature in 2017.

“I’m happy to learn the governor may discuss repealing the pension tax during her State of the State address this week,” said Bellino, of Monroe. “I proposed my plan a full year ago. Michigan retirees who were promised tax-free public pensions for most of their careers were being failed by their state government.”

It’s unclear whether the governor will be supporting Bellino’s bill or a similar bill in the Senate, but Bellino is excited to see his idea potentially cross the finish line, nonetheless.

“We can now rightfully encourage our seniors to spend their retirement right here in Michigan,” Bellino said.

In April of 2021, he testified on this bill before the House Committee on Tax Policy, urging his case. In 2019, he had proposed a similar version of the bill.

“It’s time to do the right thing and repeal the tax on senior citizens once and for all,” Bellino said.
