State Rep. Jaime Greene, right, meets with Riley Gaines, a former All-American NCAA swimmer who was forced to compete in the 2022 Women’s Swimming National Championships against Lia Thomas, a biological male.
State Rep. Jaime Greene is leading an effort to protect female athletes and make sure they have a fair playing field in Michigan.
This week, Greene, R-Richmond, introduced legislation designed to protect athletes in Michigan from facing the same unfair circumstances as Riley Gaines, a former All-American NCAA swimmer who was forced to compete in the 2022 Women’s Swimming National Championships against Lia Thomas, a biological male.
“Women worked hard for decades to put Title IX protections in place so they could have equal opportunities to compete,” Greene said. “Allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports undermines our progress as a society and reduces women to second-class status. Girls and women in Michigan deserve to have equal opportunities to showcase their talent and compete fairly, and I want to make sure we don’t sideline our girls!”
Greene’s plan, House Bill 4546, would create the Female Athletics Integrity of Records (FAIR) Act to require awards, rankings, and records of sporting events to be categorized consistently with each competitor’s biological sex. The requirement would apply to any publicly funded event for which there are separate female and male competitions.
House Bill 4546 was referred to the House Government Operations Committee for consideration.
