State Rep. Tom Kuhn (R-Troy) today voted to fund a $2.175 million grant to help preserve the Turtle Woods Nature Preserve in Troy.
The grant, awarded through the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, will allow Oakland County to purchase the land from the Troy School District, officially establishing Oakland County Parks’ first-ever nature preserve.
“Turtle Woods is more than just green space. It has been a peaceful, natural retreat for generations of Troy families,” said Kuhn. “It’s a place where kids explore, seniors walk, and wildlife thrives. I’m proud to support this funding that will protect the area from development and ensure it remains a community treasure.”
The 20-acre preserve, nestled in the heart of the city, has long been valued by local residents for its quiet beauty and ecological significance.
“By preserving Turtle Woods, we’re not only protecting important natural habitat, but we’re also securing a space where students, families, and future generations can connect with nature right here at home,” said Kuhn. “This is a big win for our community, and I know how much it means to so many who have fought to see it protected.”
The project is part of House Bill 4392, which includes $41.7 million in funding for 17 land acquisition projects and 68 recreational development projects across the state. All funding comes from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, which uses revenue from resource leases rather than taxpayer dollars from the state’s General Fund.
The bill was approved by the Michigan House and now moves to the Senate for consideration.
