State Rep. Ron Robinson today announced the formation of the Michigan Building Trades Caucus, a bipartisan, bicameral group focused on strengthening Michigan’s skilled trades workforce and expanding opportunity for the next generation. Robinson will serve as chair, joined by Rep. Joey Andrews and Sen. Ed McBroom as vice chairs.
“Skilled trades are the backbone of Michigan’s economy and our communities,” said Robinson (R-Utica). “This caucus is about bringing people together to support commonsense policies, expand opportunities for workers, and make sure the next generation has a clear path to good-paying, in-demand careers.”
“Michigan is facing a serious housing shortage, and the reality is that homes don’t get built without skilled tradesmen,” Robinson said. “If we want to increase housing supply and bring down costs, we have to prioritize investment in career and technical education and apprenticeship programs that train the next generation of builders and trades professionals.”
The caucus will serve as a collaborative forum for lawmakers and industry leaders to strengthen trades education, expand apprenticeship pathways, and address workforce shortages impacting housing and infrastructure across the state. Robinson said the effort is ultimately about creating real opportunity for young people and keeping talent here in Michigan.
“Supporting our young people and developing homegrown talent is one of the smartest investments we can make,” Robinson said. “Career and technical education creates pathways to stable, well-paying careers without leaving students with massive debt payments. These programs give people the opportunity to buy a home, raise a family, and build their future right here in Michigan.”
