State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine (R-Harrison Township) today showed support for a bipartisan school safety package that advanced on the House floor. The package includes a range of measures aimed at preventing school violence and student suicides, while increasing awareness of available safety resources.
One key part of the package is House Bill 4225, which would require school districts to include contact information for OK2SAY on all student ID cards. OK2SAY is a confidential reporting program that empowers students to report threats, violence, and other concerning behaviors.
“This is a simple step that could prevent a tragedy,” said St. Germaine. “My husband served as a school resource officer, and he saw firsthand how impactful the OK2SAY program was in helping students speak up and get support. It’s an effective, proactive tool to keep our schools safe.
“Increasing preparedness and awareness is a critical part of protecting our children and educators. OK2SAY is a confidential way to report threats to students, faculty, or school communities. This is a smart, proactive investment in school safety.”
Other key components to the school safety package include:
- Requiring schools to regularly update emergency operations plans and improve fire and security drill protocols.
- Expanding safety training opportunities for school personnel in partnership with the Michigan State Police and the Office of School Safety.
- Directing the Office of School Safety to publish quarterly safety bulletins with tips and best practices.
- Ensuring schools receive timely safety alerts and updates from the Michigan State Police.
For immediate threats or emergencies, individuals should contact 911.
